I have been spotting for the last 6 months, and bleeding with heavy flow for the last 2 weeks. I am on the pill, have three children and am 41 what is happening?

I have recently had an ultrasound which revealed a thickened endometrial wall, no fybroids. My pap smear in January came back negative. I had an extensive blood panel done to rule out thyroid and it only revealed an unusally high rate of blood clotting. My blood pressure is suddenly and unusually high. I already take NSAIDS for my knees so I am not sure that would help stop the bleeding. The bleeding has been heavy for the last 2 weeks. I am not insured, I am self employed. Can you give me any specific direction in which I can ask the doctor more specific questions when I see him? Thank you very much!

Answer:

Again--I do think it is a Hormonal fluctuation problem:

Ask him to test your levels of:

  • Estrogen
  • Progesterone
  • FSH
  • LH
  • TSH [thyroid]

Based on the exact levels of each--he should be able to put you on a [hormonal] Treatment regimen to fix the irregular bleeding.

I believe the BP problem is a separate problem--obviously, that should also be treated [by Internist or Cardiologist].
