follicular lesion on thyroid

Sent to Health Experts November 28 04:56 PM

I had a needle biopsy on my thyroid nodule and it came back as a follicular lesion, and they want to do a surgical biospy. I don't like the ideas of taking have of my thyroid out for a lesion that is statistically 85% benign. Can they just remove the nodule? If they cannot, and need to remove the entire lobe what are the reasons why that is? I don't want to have thyroid problems for the rest of my life over a benign lesion. I don't hear good things about any of the replacement therapies.

Hi

Unfortunately with Follicular lesion they do need to be surgically removed. Even though the percentage of malignancy is low it is still a possibility.
The surgeon should be able to remove a small area of the thyroid which just surrounds the nodule. There is no reason to remove the entire lobe unless the nodule is malignant.
I can understand perfectly what you are going through. I myself had a follicular nodule which turned out to be benign. I had a very small portion of the inferior lobe removed, thats where the nodule was located. Being that the area removed was so small there was no need to take any thyroid replacement hormone.
Every case is different and it all depends on the size of the nodule and where the nodule is located.
I would advise you to discuss the option of removing just the area around the nodule, however I do not suggest that you do nothing about this as there is a chance of malignancy.

Best wishes......
