can gential herpes lay dormant for years then come out all a sudden

i had hpv when i was 20 or so i was never told this. since then i have had a total hysterectomy due to this. that was in april 2005 i am 35 now.
now my husband says who we only been together 4 yrs. says he thinks he has gential warts. is this possible he got from me ? or somewhere else
